Summary of this blog
- HealthTech AI search is the work of getting a HealthTech company named and linked in the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features give to buyers. The unit of success is a citation, and citations follow different rules from rankings.
- Ahrefs checked 15,000 prompts across four AI assistants and found only 12% of the URLs they cited ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same query. Ranking well helps; on its own it is no longer enough.
- The same study found Perplexity leans hardest on Google’s top results (28.6% overlap) and ChatGPT least (8%). Each engine has its own crawler and its own habits, and the first move is letting them in.
- Health is “Your Money or Your Life” (YMYL) content under Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines, so the evidence and the named expert behind a page matter more here than in most sectors.
- Six moves, in order: open the door to the crawlers, write the sentence the answer will lift, answer the follow-up questions, prove it with sources and a named expert, become an entity the models recognise, and measure citations rather than rankings alone.
HealthTech AI search is the practice of getting a HealthTech company named, and linked, in the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features give when a buyer asks a question. The buyer might be a head of digital at a US health system asking which patient engagement platforms integrate with Epic, or a clinic owner in Manchester asking who to trust with a website rebuild. Either way, an AI tool now answers first, and the companies it names form the shortlist. HealthTech AI search decides whether you are on it.
The evidence says this is a separate discipline from classic SEO. Ahrefs ran 15,000 long-tail prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot and found that only 12% of the URLs the assistants cited ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same query. Perplexity overlapped most, at 28.6%. ChatGPT overlapped least, at 8%. A HealthTech AI search strategy therefore starts with the assumption that your rankings will not carry you into the answer on their own.
The audience is already there. KFF’s tracking poll from March 2026 found that 32% of US adults have turned to AI tools for health information or advice, and among those who have, around two thirds trust what they get. Professional buyers use the same tools for the same reason: a fast first answer. This guide sets out six ways to become that answer, in the order most HealthTech teams should work through them.
An AI answer is a shortlist written by a machine. HealthTech AI search is the work of being on it before the buyer has heard your name.
Why HealthTech AI search carries a higher bar than most sectors
Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines classify health as a “Your Money or Your Life” topic and ask raters to judge a page by the experience, expertise and reputation behind it. Answer engines apply the same instinct when they choose which source to name for a clinical or commercial health question. A page with no author, no evidence and no track record is easy to skip. HealthTech AI search rewards the pages that look, to a machine, like the safest thing to quote.
1. Open the door to the AI crawlers
The first move in HealthTech AI search is the least glamorous and the most often missed. Each answer engine reaches the web through its own crawler, and a site can block one without knowing. Security-minded HealthTech teams often add a blanket rule to robots.txt during a compliance review, and from that day the company disappears from ChatGPT search results while its Google rankings carry on as before. No amount of HealthTech AI search work on the page can fix a door that is locked.
Know which bot does what
OpenAI documents three user agents. OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features”, and sites that disallow it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers”. GPTBot collects training data and can be blocked separately without affecting search. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks about it, so robots.txt rules may not apply. Perplexity is similar: PerplexityBot “is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity” and is not used for model training.
Google is the simplest case. Its guidance on AI features and your website says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, no special markup and no AI text file. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, which is the same bar as ordinary search. HealthTech AI search on Google is won or lost with the same foundations as everything else.
A five-minute check
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and any wildcard disallow that would catch them. Then check your CDN or firewall rules, because bot-blocking features often ship switched on. If you want to keep training crawlers out on data-protection grounds, block GPTBot alone and leave the search crawlers in. Our HealthTech technical SEO checklist covers the rest of the crawl foundations that HealthTech AI search depends on.
2. Write the sentence the answer will lift
Answer engines assemble a response from fragments. They pull a definition from one page, a statistic from another and a recommendation from a third, and they cite the page each fragment came from. The pages that get cited are the ones that contain a sentence clean enough to lift. HealthTech AI search therefore begins on the page, in the first line under each heading.
The definition-first rule
Every commercial page should open with a sentence that answers the question the page exists for, in a form a machine could quote without editing. “A HealthTech go-to-market strategy is the plan for turning a validated product into repeatable revenue” is liftable. “In this article we explore the many facets of go-to-market” is not. The same rule applies to each H2: answer the heading’s question in its first sentence, then explain. A buyer skimming, and a model extracting, both get the point before the paragraph.
At Healthora, we have seen that this single change does more for HealthTech AI search than any technical adjustment. When we rewrote the opening lines of a client’s service pages into plain definitions, the pages began appearing as cited sources in ChatGPT answers to vendor questions within a quarter, with no change to their Google positions. The words the model could quote were the words that earned the citation.
Name the things you want to be known for
Models attach ideas to names. A framework with a name (“the Trust Stack”, “the five-question landing page audit”) is easier to cite than a paragraph of good advice, because the name gives the model a handle. Give your method a name, define it once, and use it consistently across the site. Named ideas travel further in HealthTech AI search than unnamed ones. Our guide to answer engine optimisation for HealthTech covers the page structure in more depth.
3. Answer the follow-up questions as well as the query
Google describes how its AI features choose links: they use “query fan-out”, issuing “multiple related searches across subtopics” and pulling a wider set of pages than a single results page would show. ChatGPT and Perplexity behave the same way in practice. A buyer’s one question becomes six or seven machine questions, and the page that answers several of them at once is the page that gets cited. This is why HealthTech AI search rewards depth on a topic over a single strong page.
Map the fan-out before you write
Take the question your buyer asks, “which remote patient monitoring platforms are HIPAA compliant and integrate with Epic”, and list the questions a model would ask on the way to answering it. What is HIPAA compliance for a software vendor. Which platforms publish an Epic integration. What do they cost. Who has deployed them in a health system of this size. Each is a heading, an FAQ entry or a supporting page. A HealthTech AI search plan is a list of these sub-questions, with a page assigned to each. Miss half of them and the HealthTech AI search citation goes to the competitor who answered them.
Use the FAQ as the fan-out’s landing spot
An FAQ section at the end of a page, marked up with FAQPage schema, is the cheapest way to answer five sub-questions in one place. Write each answer as a complete, standalone paragraph, because the model may quote it without the question. Keep the questions in the words buyers use, which are rarely the words the product team uses. Our HealthTech SEO services pillar sets out how this cluster-and-FAQ structure fits the wider organic programme.

In health, a claim without evidence is a liability for the model as much as for the buyer. An answer engine that names a source for a clinical or commercial health question is putting its own credibility behind that page. The pages it prefers are the ones that make the choice safe: a named author with visible credentials, statistics with links to where they came from, and claims a reviewer could check. HealthTech AI search is, at this step, the same discipline as YMYL SEO.
What a machine reads as trust
Author name and role on every article, with a bio page that describes real experience in health. Publication and last-updated dates. Citations that link to primary sources, such as the FDA, the WHO, a peer-reviewed journal or a named industry report. A statement of who the company is and who it serves. None of this is new advice for a health domain. What has changed is that the reward now includes being named in the answer as well as ranking under it. Evidence is the HealthTech AI search signal a machine can verify.
Keep the claims true and specific
Models are increasingly good at noticing when a figure has no source, and a fabricated statistic can cost a page its place in future answers. Where you have a real outcome, publish it with the setting. Where you do not, say what you saw qualitatively and move on. A HealthTech AI search programme built on borrowed numbers fails the moment a buyer asks the model to verify them. See our case studies for how we present outcomes with their context.
5. Become an entity the models recognise
Answer engines do more than read pages; they build a picture of who a company is from everything on the web that mentions it. A HealthTech vendor that appears in directories, partner pages, podcast notes, trade press and conference agendas, always with the same name and description, becomes an entity the model is confident about. A company that exists only on its own domain is a guess. HealthTech AI search is partly an off-site job for that reason, and the off-site part is where most HealthTech AI search programmes stall.
Consistency first, then coverage
Use one company name, one description and one category everywhere: your About page, LinkedIn, Clutch, G2, partner marketplaces and any directory that lists you. Add Organization schema to the site with the same details. Then earn mentions on the sites the models already trust in your field. The tactics are the same ones that build domain authority, and our guide to how HealthTech companies rank in ChatGPT covers which mentions carry the most weight.
The two questions to test
Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity “what is [your company]” and “who are the leading [your category] providers”. If the first answer is wrong or vague, the entity work is not done. If the second omits you while naming smaller competitors, the mentions are not there yet. At Healthora, we have seen warm inbound enquiries arrive from ChatGPT once the site was consistently described across the places the model reads, which is the proof point behind the way we approach HealthTech AI search for clients.
6. Measure citations, and what they convert into
Rankings are visible in any SEO tool. Citations are not, so most HealthTech teams do not measure them and cannot tell whether the work is paying. The fix is a simple monthly routine: a fixed set of buyer prompts, run through each engine, with a note of whether you are named, which page is cited, and who else appears. Over a quarter this becomes the clearest scorecard HealthTech AI search has, and the one a board will understand when HealthTech AI search comes up in a growth review.
Follow the traffic that does arrive
Referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai show up in analytics as their own sources. The volumes are small. The value is high. Ahrefs published its own site data in 2025: 0.5% of its traffic came from AI search and produced 12.1% of its sign-ups, a conversion rate around 23 times higher than ordinary organic visitors, with most of it from ChatGPT. A buyer who arrives from an AI answer has already been told you are a credible option. Treat that traffic as the most qualified you have.
Expect fewer clicks from Google, and plan for it
The other side of HealthTech AI search is that the classic results page sends less traffic than it did. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords before and after AI Overviews launched and found a 34.5% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an Overview was present. A site that measures success in sessions will read that as decline. A site that measures citations, referrals and enquiries will see where the buyers went. Our guide to Google AI Overviews for HealthTech covers staying visible inside them, and GEO vs SEO sets out how to split effort between the two.
What HealthTech AI search looks like in practice
In practice, HealthTech AI search runs as a quarterly loop. Month one is access and structure: confirm the crawlers can reach you, rewrite the opening line of every commercial page as a definition, and add an FAQ with schema to each. The second month is evidence and entity: put a named author and sourced statistics on the pages that matter, align the company description everywhere it appears, and ask partners and directories for the mentions you are missing. Measurement fills the third month: run the fixed HealthTech AI search prompt set, log the citations, and read the AI referral traffic against enquiries.
Then repeat, with the pages that were cited as the model for the ones that were not. Most HealthTech companies find the first loop moves them from absent to present in a handful of answers, and that presence compounds, because a cited page is found by the next writer and the next model. The pattern holds for B2B HealthTech vendors and for clinics and wellness brands answering consumer questions alike. HealthTech AI search is a discipline you keep running.
The recap below lists the six HealthTech AI search moves in the order to work through them.
- Open the door to the AI crawlers. Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, block GPTBot separately if you must, and check the CDN rules.
- Write the sentence the answer will lift. A liftable definition in the first line of every commercial page and every H2. Name your frameworks.
- Answer the follow-up questions. Map the fan-out behind each buyer question and give each sub-question a heading, an FAQ entry or a page.
- Prove it with sources and a named expert. Author, dates, primary-source citations and claims a reviewer could check. Health is YMYL.
- Become an entity the models recognise. One name and description everywhere, Organization schema, and mentions on the sites the models trust.
- Measure citations and what they convert into. A monthly prompt set, AI referral traffic in analytics, and enquiries traced back to the answer.
HealthTech AI search sits inside a wider organic programme, alongside technical health, keyword strategy and links. Our pillar guide to HealthTech SEO services shows how the pieces fit, and our services page sets out what we do for HealthTech and health brands across all of them.
A specialist in health understands that an AI answer about a clinical product or a clinic carries more weight, and closer scrutiny, than an answer about a consumer app. The companies the models name are the ones that made themselves easy to trust and easy to quote. Do the six moves in order, and yours will be one of them.

What is HealthTech AI search?
HealthTech AI search is the practice of getting a HealthTech company named and linked in the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features give to buyers’ questions. The unit of success is a citation. Citations follow their own rules: crawler access, a quotable first sentence, coverage of follow-up questions, visible evidence and expertise, a consistent entity across the web, and measurement.
Does ranking in Google mean ChatGPT will cite my HealthTech company?
Rarely on its own. Ahrefs tested 15,000 prompts across four AI assistants and found only 12% of the URLs they cited ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same query. Perplexity overlapped most, at 28.6%, and ChatGPT least, at 8%. Rankings help, but HealthTech AI search needs the pages to be crawlable by each engine’s bot, quotable in their first lines and backed by evidence.
How do I let ChatGPT and Perplexity crawl my site without giving away training data?
Allow the search crawlers and block the training crawler. This is the first HealthTech AI search check to run. OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot collects training data, and the two are controlled separately in robots.txt. Perplexity’s PerplexityBot surfaces sites in Perplexity results and is not used for model training. Check your CDN and firewall settings too, because bot-blocking rules often catch these crawlers by default.
Do I need special schema or an AI text file for HealthTech AI search on Google?
No. Google’s own guidance says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special structured data and no AI text file. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, which is the same bar as ordinary search. FAQPage and Organization schema still help the other engines read your pages and your company clearly.
Is AI search traffic worth the effort for a HealthTech company?
Yes. The volume is small and the conversion is high. Ahrefs reported that 0.5% of its own traffic came from AI search and produced 12.1% of its sign-ups, a conversion rate around 23 times higher than ordinary organic visitors. A buyer arriving from an AI answer has already been told you are a credible option, which is why HealthTech AI search referrals should be treated as the most qualified traffic a site receives.
How do I measure whether HealthTech AI search is working?
Run a fixed set of buyer prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google each month and log whether you are named, which page is cited and who else appears. Track referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in analytics and trace enquiries back to them. Judge the programme on citations and enquiries, because Google clicks are falling for many queries: Ahrefs found a 34.5% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview is present.
Does HealthTech AI search apply to clinics and wellness brands as well as B2B vendors?
Yes. KFF’s 2026 poll found 32% of US adults have used AI tools for health information or advice, and consumers ask the same tools which clinic or brand to trust. The six moves are the same for a clinic as for a software vendor: crawlable pages, quotable answers, coverage of follow-up questions, visible expertise, a consistent entity and monthly measurement.
