Summary of this blog
- An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google places above the organic results, built from pages it selects and cites. The Google AI Overviews HealthTech effect is that Google now answers the question above the first result, and the click that used to follow the question often never happens.
- The fall is measured. Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with a summary against 15% without. Ahrefs found position-one click-through rate down 58% where an Overview appears. Gartner found 82% of consumers have noticed AI Overviews, while more than two thirds continue past them.
- Five responses. Measure the real effect by query type. Separate informational pages from buyer-intent pages. Become the source the Overview cites. Protect the conversion pages with the snippet settings Google provides. Report on citations and qualified demand rather than clicks.
- Health raises the bar. Health queries are Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics in Google’s rater guidelines. The cited page carries a named clinician, sourced claims and a review date, with experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) visible on the page.
- Judge the channel on one number: qualified demand from organic by page type, with citations alongside it, rather than the organic sessions line the summary has taken.
The Google AI Overviews HealthTech effect is easy to state and hard to see in a traffic report. Google now answers the searcher’s question in an AI-written summary above the first organic result, and the click that used to follow the question often never happens. A dental group’s implant-cost page, a hospital system’s symptom guide and a health SaaS company’s “what is remote patient monitoring” article all lose visits to an answer written from their own words. The organic line falls while the rankings hold, and the marketing lead is asked what happened.
The fall is measured. Pew Research Center’s July 2025 study of 900 US adults and 68,879 searches found an AI summary on 18% of searches, and users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with a summary against 15% without. Ahrefs’ February 2026 update, across 300,000 keywords from December 2023 to December 2025, found position-one click-through rate (CTR) down 58% where an AI Overview appears. Gartner’s January 2026 survey found 82% of consumers have noticed AI Overviews, while more than two thirds continue past them. That is the Google AI Overviews HealthTech picture: fewer clicks per query, and a reader who often keeps going.
This guide sets out five Google AI Overviews HealthTech responses for the marketing lead or founder at a HealthTech company, a clinic group or a health system whose organic report has turned down while rankings have held. Our pillar on HealthTech SEO services covers the programme the five responses sit inside, and our guide to HealthTech SEO ROI covers the reporting model the fifth response builds on.
An AI Overview answers the question before the click. Google AI Overviews HealthTech reporting has to count the buyer who arrives ready and the citation that put the company in the answer, because the click alone no longer tells the story.
The query-type comparison before any decision
Export twelve months of queries from Google Search Console and mark each one as informational, navigational or buyer-intent. Compare clicks and impressions for each group against the same months a year earlier. The group where impressions held and clicks fell is where the summary is answering for you. A Google AI Overviews HealthTech response built from that comparison starts with the pages that lost something, rather than with the whole site.
1. Measure the real effect by query type
The first response is to measure before reacting. A single organic-traffic line hides what happened, because an AI Overview appears on some queries and on none of the others. Google AI Overviews HealthTech measurement starts in Google Search Console: twelve months of queries, each one marked as informational, navigational or buyer-intent, with clicks and impressions for each group compared against the same months a year earlier. The fall almost always lives in one group.
The worked example
Take a 300-bed hospital system, with illustrative figures. Impressions for its symptom and condition pages hold, clicks on them fall by a third, and the average position is unchanged, which means the summary is answering the question. Its “find a specialist” and “book an appointment” queries show no change at all. The report that said “organic is down 20%” now says “informational clicks are down and appointment demand is flat”, and that is a different conversation with the board.
Which signals matter most
Impressions held with clicks down says an Overview took the click. Impressions down says the page lost rank or the query lost volume, which is a different problem with a different fix. The Google AI Overviews HealthTech comparison needs to be rerun each quarter, because the effect is growing. Gartner’s January 2026 survey found 51% of consumers say their research habits have changed, and 38% of those now use more specific terms, so the queries themselves are shifting under the report.
2. Separate informational pages from buyer pages
The second response is to sort the site. An informational page exists to answer a question, and an AI Overview answers the question faster and above the page. A buyer-intent page exists to be read by someone deciding: pricing, comparison, integrations, security, outcomes, booking. Google AI Overviews HealthTech strategy treats the two differently, because the first has lost its traffic role and the second has kept its commercial one.
The two shelves
Put every page on one of two shelves. Shelf one holds glossary entries, “what is” articles, symptom guides and how-to posts. The second shelf holds service and product pages, pricing, case studies, comparison pages, the demo and booking pages, and the location pages a clinic group runs. The first earns citations and brand mentions; the second earns enquiries. Our guide to HealthTech keyword strategy covers choosing terms by the demand behind them, which is the same sorting done before the pages are written.
What we see when the shelves exist
At Healthora, we have seen that companies which sort their pages this way tend to stop defending informational traffic they were never converting and start investing in the buyer pages that were. The result has been more qualified enquiries from a smaller organic total. A Google AI Overviews HealthTech audit that ends with the two shelves is already most of the strategy.
3. Become the source the Overview cites
The third response is to be the page the summary is built from. Google’s documentation on AI features states that no special markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, that the same Search Essentials apply, and that a page must be indexable and eligible for snippets. The pages that are cited answer clearly, carry a named author, source their claims and show a review date. Google AI Overviews HealthTech citation work is ordinary SEO done to a higher standard on the pages that matter.
Health raises the bar
Health queries are Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics in Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which ask for the highest level of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) on pages that can affect a person’s health. A cited health page carries the clinician’s name and credentials, cites the guideline or study behind each claim, and shows when it was last reviewed. Our guide to healthcare E-E-A-T covers building those signals page by page.
The Google AI Overviews HealthTech citation check
Once a month, type the ten buyer questions and the ten informational questions that matter most into Google and record which pages the Overview cites. Ahrefs found the overlap between AI citations and Google’s top ten is small, so ranking first does not mean being cited. The check is a table with twenty rows and a column for each month, and the first month usually shows a competitor’s page under a question the company thought it owned.

The fourth response is the choice most health companies have not made. Google’s AI features documentation confirms that a site controls what appears in a summary: the nosnippet rule keeps a page out of snippets and Overviews entirely, and max-snippet caps how much text can be shown. Google AI Overviews HealthTech policy is set page by page. A pricing page the summary condenses to one figure loses the conditions that justified the figure; a symptom guide the summary cites gains a mention the company could never buy.
The three settings
Open: the page is eligible, written to be cited, and willing to lose the click. Capped: max-snippet limits the extract to the definition and keeps the detail on the page. Closed: nosnippet, for pages where a partial answer misleads, such as pricing with conditions attached or a regulated claim that needs its context. Decide the Google AI Overviews HealthTech setting for every shelf-two page, write it into the page template, and record the reason beside it.
The direct answer plus the next step
Whatever the setting, a buyer page read by a machine and a person at once opens with the direct answer and follows it with the next step. The first paragraph answers the question in two sentences. The second says what to do next: the comparison, the demo, the booking. Gartner’s January 2026 survey found that 18% of the consumers whose research habits changed now draft prompts in a GenAI tool before searching Google. The buyer arrives with the question already sharpened, and the Google AI Overviews HealthTech page that answers it directly wins the visit.
5. Report on citations and qualified demand
The fifth response is the report, and it decides whether the first four survive the next budget round. A report built on organic sessions will show a fall and invite a cut. Google AI Overviews HealthTech reporting shows three things in place of one: clicks by page type, citations by question, and qualified demand from organic. Ahrefs found that AI search visitors converted at a far higher rate than organic visitors on its own site, and the visitor who arrives after reading a summary arrives with the easy questions already answered.
The one-page report
Row one: clicks and impressions by shelf, against the prior year. The second row: the twenty questions and which pages the Overview cites, month by month. The third row: enquiries, demo requests and bookings attributed to organic, by landing page. One page, monthly, is the Google AI Overviews HealthTech report a board can read in five minutes. Our guide to HealthTech SEO ROI covers attributing the third row to revenue.
What we see when the report changes
At Healthora, we have seen that the organic conversation changes once the report does. A health SaaS company reporting organic sessions alone tends to face a cut after a year of AI Overviews. One reporting citations and qualified demand tends to see a noticeable rise in support for the pages that produce enquiries. Our case studies show what the reporting looks like in engagements we have run.
Google AI Overviews HealthTech in practice: the first quarter
Google AI Overviews HealthTech work takes a quarter to set up and a year to prove. Month one runs the measurement: twelve months of queries from Google Search Console, sorted by intent, compared with the prior year. Then month two sorts the pages onto the two shelves and sets the snippet policy for every buyer page. The third month rewrites the ten buyer pages to open with the direct answer and the next step, adds the author, sources and review date to each, and runs the first citation check.
The change shows first in the citation table, where the company’s pages start appearing under the buyer questions. Then the enquiry row holds or rises while the click row keeps falling, which is the shape of a Google AI Overviews HealthTech programme that is working. By the end of the year the board reads one page a month and asks about demand rather than sessions. The informational pages that lost their clicks are earning the mentions that bring the buyer to the pricing page.
The recap below lists the five Google AI Overviews HealthTech responses in the order to make them.
- Measure the real effect by query type. Twelve months of Search Console queries, marked informational, navigational or buyer-intent, compared with the prior year. The fall lives in one group.
- Separate informational pages from buyer pages. Two shelves: the Google AI Overviews HealthTech shelf that earns citations and loses clicks, and the buyer shelf that earns enquiries.
- Become the source the Overview cites. A direct answer, a named clinician, sourced claims and a review date on every page that matters, checked monthly against twenty questions.
- Protect the conversion pages. Open, capped or closed, decided page by page with nosnippet and max-snippet, and every buyer page opening with the answer and the next step.
- Report on citations and qualified demand. Three rows on one page, monthly. Google AI Overviews HealthTech work is judged here, on demand rather than sessions.
The five Google AI Overviews HealthTech responses can be made by the in-house team, by a specialist agency, or by the two together. Our services and case studies show what the work looks like in engagements we have run, and our pillar on HealthTech SEO services covers the programme the five responses sit inside.
A specialist in health understands that the click was a proxy for the buyer, and that Google has moved the buyer’s first answer above the click. Measure by query type, sort the pages, earn the citation, protect the conversion pages, and report on demand. Then the organic report tells the board what the channel is producing rather than what the summary took.

What are Google AI Overviews?
AI-written summaries that Google places above the organic results for a growing share of queries, built from pages it selects and cites beneath the text. Pew Research Center found a summary on 18% of the searches in its 2025 study. For Google AI Overviews HealthTech teams the practical definition is shorter: Google now answers the question above the first result, often from the page that used to earn the click.
Do AI Overviews reduce our website traffic?
On informational queries, yes. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with a summary against 15% without, and Ahrefs found position-one click-through rate down 58% where an Overview appears. Buyer-intent queries, such as pricing, booking and comparison, are affected far less, which is why the effect has to be measured by query type rather than as one organic line.
How do we get cited in an AI Overview?
Google’s AI features documentation says no special markup is needed; the page has to be indexable, eligible for snippets and useful. In practice the cited health pages open with a direct answer, carry a named clinician with credentials, source every claim and show a review date, because health is a YMYL topic held to the highest E-E-A-T standard. Check monthly which pages the Overview cites for your twenty most important questions.
Is AI search different from traditional SEO?
The signals are the same; the outcome being measured is different. Google AI Overviews HealthTech work uses the same indexing, snippet eligibility and quality signals as ordinary SEO. Ahrefs found the overlap between AI citations and Google’s top ten is small, so ranking first and being cited are separate results. Traditional SEO measured the click; AI search is measured by the citation and the qualified visitor who arrives after reading the summary.
Should we still invest in traditional SEO?
Yes, with different accounting. Gartner found more than two thirds of consumers continue past the AI Overview, and the buyer-intent pages beneath it still earn the enquiry. A Google AI Overviews HealthTech strategy moves the investment from informational pages that lost their click to the buyer pages that kept their role, and reports on citations and demand rather than sessions.
How do we know if AI Overviews are affecting us?
Run the Search Console comparison: twelve months of queries sorted by intent, clicks and impressions against the same months a year earlier. Impressions held with clicks down and position unchanged is the signature of a summary answering for you. Then type your twenty most important questions into Google and record which pages the Overview cites, because the second half of the Google AI Overviews HealthTech effect is who gets the citation.
What does Healthora charge for this work?
Fees depend on scope, from a one-off query-type comparison and page sort to an engagement covering the citation work, the snippet policy and the monthly report, and are agreed for the engagement rather than billed by the hour. The consultation is free and includes a first read of your Search Console data.
